Rule one: give something they'd never buy themselves. Romantic, in our experience, lives in that narrow gap between 'I want it' and 'I'd never spend money on it for me.' That's where most of the good anniversary gifts actually sit.

Rule two: the gift should outlast the day. If it's gone by Tuesday, it was a gesture — not a gift. A gesture is fine, but it's not what this list is for. Look for things that will still be on the desk, or in the cupboard, or on the wrist, six months from now.

Rule three: a story beats a price tag. The $28 thing that reminds them of the café you went to on your second date will beat the $400 thing every single time. Money doesn't buy the look they get on their face when they understand why you picked it.
